Opera is perhaps the only internet browser taking blockchain seriously. It has indeed a cryptocurrency-focused version, which should soon natively support the TRON blockchain.

But what does it mean for Opera users? Put simply, we would be able to use TRON-based tokens and decentralized applications within the browser itself. Furthermore, Opera’s in-house cryptocurrency wallet will support TRX and other tokens among the TRC-standard. We should note that Opera’s built-in wallet is available for desktop and mobile devices (both Android and iOS).

TRON’s CEO Justin Sun said:

“We are excited that Opera, a mainstream browser with hundreds of millions of users, will now seamlessly support TRX and other TRON tokens. Soon, Opera users will be able to use dapps on the TRON blockchain.”

This is a notable move from Opera and its blockchain expansion. Up until recently, the browser worked solely with the Ethereum network and the tokens it supported. In other words, TRON becomes the second blockchain protocol to be featured in Opera.

A spokesperson from Opera explained why the browser decided to add TRON when asked about the reason behind the move:

“TRON is one of the fastest developing blockchains with plenty of dapps so it’s a logical step as we aim at growing the usage and ecosystem for dapps.”

Anyway, we should note that TRON is rather a speculative candidate for the position. It may be the fastest growing blockchain network but already a handful of researches showed that the majority of the traffic comes from gambling apps. Not to mention a crucial bug that potentially could have resulted in the network shutting. Thankfully, the last was prevented as a cybersecurity researcher sounded the alarm.

Opera is among the most used browsers worldwide boosting over 300 million users globally. Some expect that once TRON lands on Opera its gambling activity will grow even more. Perhaps then crypto evangelists will see that as adoption, right?

Furthermore, Opera did not clarify when the integration is happening:

“At this point, we cannot disclose any more specific details regarding availability.”

However, the spokesperson hinted that more blockchains are to be added.
