Yandex, a software company in Russia took a huge step by having a test drive for its self-driving taxi in the snow. According to information given by the company, the model covered a total distance of 300 kilometers. The company put a video to show the cars during the demonstration.

Dmitry Polishchuk, who is the head of Yandex taxi self-driving project said that they had been working on this winter algorithm at a garage but this vision became a reality last weekend when they made this milestone trial.
The computer vision technology vehicles are meant to prepare these cars not only for good weather conditions but also for adverse conditions which are also realities of the life today. The test recognized the unique challenges snow pose to vehicles. Apart from obscuring vision, snowy conditions also make driving surfaces very slippery. These are the main reasons that made the test on snow even more important.
That said, the company also acknowledges the fact that this is only the first step towards making the whole project a success. There is need to test the car on public roads so that the experience with human drivers can be tested. It expects to make this test next year. However, there is a challenge of the legal provisions within Russia. This is because the current legal regulations in Russia do not allow for use of self-driving cars on roads used by the members of the public.
Polishchuk said that the test went on as planned and there was nothing out of the ordinary or unexpected that took place during the operation. He added that there is a need for the computer vision algorithm to be designed in such a way that they can conveniently move when snow is falling and the road being used is covered by snow. The slick surface should also be added as a speed mode in these vehicles. To ensure the reliability of the technology on the self-driving car on these conditions, the test will continue the whole winter.
The project for this self-driving car was started in may. The prototype car is said to have the normal vehicle parts coupled with custom-made auto parts that are specific to this car. it also has a special software that enables it to drive itself.
In addition, Yandex and Uber were also allowed to operate a joint venture with the regulatory authorities. In the agreement, the two companies will operate as a joint company Yandex being the majority shareholder.
