Wal-Mart Stores Inc., one of the world`s biggest retailers, is introducing self-scanning robots in more than 50 stores across the USA.

According to Reuters, the robots will provide a service that can restock the shelves and help employees when products run out. Out-of-stock items seem to be a big problem for retailers, as they could potentially lead to missing sales and falling revenues.

Wal-Mart has been testing self-scanning robots in stores in Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and California. The robots are 50 percent more productive than human employees because they can scan shelves accurately and faster, as Jeremy King, chief technology officer for Walmart US, told Reuters.

However, the company commented that they have no intention to replace employees with robots. The move is said to be part of a broader effort to digitize its stores to make shopping faster. Other such efforts include allowing customers to scan their own purchases, and digitize operations like pharmacy and financial services in stores. Wal-Mart is also testing the use of drones for home delivery and checking of warehouse inventories.

Still, other retailers like Amazon.com Inc has also explored the possibility of using robots in their warehouses. More specifically, their Kiva robots have been employed to handle picking and packing in warehouses.

It is to be seen how the technology will be implemented by retailers around the world.
