It was a day of contrasts at the NYSE as Bina48, the realistic robot, took charge of the opening ceremony by ringing the bell. This was the same day when fingers were being pointed at computerized trading in regards to recent turbulence in the market.

According to the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the recent upheaval in the market can be attributed to computerized trading. He made the remarks on Tuesday at Capitol Hill two days after the market took sharp dives.

Bina48 was accompanied by UBS executives when she was carrying out the opening. Another technological product by the company that developed Bina48 is the bot known as Sophia. Bina48 was, however, the only product of its kind on the podium.

The lifelike robot is considerably shorter than humans but realistic enough to turn heads. According to communication from UBS, this robot was included in the party as she was a good depiction of the strides made in AI and machine learning. The lifelike robot was thus a testament to the potential of these technologies in the financial markets.

The robot itself comprises of a bosom and head that includes a support and is apparently fashioned after tech entrepreneur Martine Rothblatt’s wife, Bina Aspen. This information is contained on the website owned by its makers, Hanson Robotics.

According to the same website, the robot is capable of having conversations with humans and often narrates the details of her troubled brother who has personality issues after participating in the Vietnam War.

The robot is not a stranger to public recognition as she has participated in a New York Times interview and a TED event as well. Sophia, her more outspoken sibling, has however been attracting more attention lately. The robot has recently appeared in an interview at CNBC where she discussed AI. She has also proved her witticism with funny remarks about Elon Musk.
