Lab-made meat company raises $3 Millions

The Israeli biotech and food-tech start-up SuperMeat has reportedly received $3 million in seed funding.

Some of the investors include US-based venture capital fund New Crop Capital and VC firm Stray Dog Capital, as well as one of Europe`s biggest poultry producers PHW.
SuperMeat is a company comprising of scientists, food engineers and chefs who aim to create a new generation of meat products that are sustainable, cost-effective, animal-friend, and delicious, as the start-up claims. Other companies exploring the idea of growing meat in a lab are represented by Bill Gates, Atomico and DFJ-backed Memphis Meats, as well as Hampton Creek.
But how is meat actually being produced in a lab? It is done by growing real animal cells, which in the case of SuperMeat are extracted from a chicken. The scientists feed the cells with nutrients to produce muscle and fat, mimicking the process that happens inside an animal`s body.
It is pointed out that lab-made meat could replace the need to rear and slaughter animals, reducing the environmental impact of industrial farming, as well as the spread of food-borne diseases, as Tech Crunch wrote in a report. The CEO of SuperMeat told the online media: “The potential benefits for public health and animal welfare are considerable.”

Also, the company quotes research conducted by the University of Oxford and the University of Amsterdam. According to the study, meat produces using in vitro tissue engineering techniques are potentially healthier and more efficient alternative to conventional meat.
However, the production of “clean meat” is still in its early days, meeting some challenges like producing a product that is cost-effective. The “clean meat” farms should scale at a cost that can compete with animal-rear farms.
