Google has announced the launch of a new certification program for mobile web developers. The Mobile Web Specialist Certification joins Google’s existing certification programs for Android developers, cloud architects, and data engineers as a way for developers to validate their skills when seeking employment or taking on new projects.

The Mobile Web Specialist Certification exam is an open book test which consists of several coding challenges and a 10-minute exit interview. The test costs $99 (or 6500 INR in India) and participants have 4 hours to complete. Participants are given three attempts at the exam.

The exam is scheduled and completed online through the Google developer site. Google alerts the developer ten-minutes before their scheduled start time and provides the link to access the exam. The exam must be started within one hour of the link being sent. The start link directs the developer to an Ubuntu MATE VM supplied with Google Chrome and ATOM. The challenges involve writing code in ATOM and testing in Chrome. Saved work is automatically submitted and unsaved work completed within the 4-hour time limit is automatically saved and submitted at the end of the exam. The program then offers the developer a brief break before the 10-minute exit interview. The exit interview consists of 5 questions about the exam and is recorded and reviewed by the Google Developers Certification Team.

It can take up to 45 days for Google to review the exam. If the first attempt is failed, the developer may schedule the second attempt immediately. There is a waiting period of 2 months before a third attempt may be completed and if the third attempt is failed, there is a 6-month waiting period before the developer is able to reschedule another attempt.

Once the exam is passed, the developer receives a digital badge to display on their resume and social media profiles. The idea behind the badge is obviously to give certified developers a way to highlight their skills to potential employers and partners. Since this is a new program, the affect and influence of the badge on employers remains to be seen.
