More than 26,000 new Blockchain related projects were begun on code repository GitHub last year. This is according to the data that was collected by Deloitte.

The company published a report last week citing that the professional services rendered by Blockchain were drawn from this developing platform, which is the back born for over 86,000 Blockchain initiatives, including other major projects such as bitcoin.

The study charts the technology development course of all the projects using various implementations (starting with bitcoin), which dates back to 2009.

2016 was the year when the newest Blockchain projects (by both individual and organization users) hit the industry to date, according to Deloitte’s report. By comparisons there are very few organizations, in fact, fewer than 15,000 that were created in 2015. The data that collected in 2017 only includes the first six months of the year, but nearly 25,000 GitHub projects were initiated over that period.

The data has the topmost code repositories on GitHub. Of those, bitcoin has surprisingly seen the most activities, with nearly 12,000 followers and 627 contributors. Geth the client software that is maintained by non-profit Ethereum Foundation has so far drawn about 5,603 followers with 149 contributors.

Another point to note about the data is that the majority of Blockchain new projects seen today are inactive on GitHub.

Deloitte Explanation

The main thing about open source projects is that they are abandoned or most of them don’t achieve a meaningful scale. Unfortunately, you find that Blockchain doesn’t have immunity to this reality. According to Deloitte’s analysis, only eight percent of projects are active, which we attributed to the fact that they are updated at once in a period of six months.

This report also gave insights about the geographical effect in regard to Blockchain development pace so far, noting that Francisco is one place that plays home to the most Blockchain related repository owners related to GitHub.

“It is also important to note that there is significant activity in China, particularly, Beijing and Shanghai. In these cities, there is a high use of cryptocurrency exchanges and cryptocurrencies, with high regard on scalability”, the reports cite.
