Ok, what you think, can you tell the difference between a script written by a machine and a one written by a human? Is artificial intelligence able to write an engaging script at all? Is AI creative?

Undoubtedly, we use AI technology on a daily basis almost all the time. A while AI creativeness is questionable it can surely help copywriters, journalists and authors create storylines or at least write better.

For instance, there is an online app called Hemingway App, which helps authors improve readability and recognize problematic sentences. How does it work? You feed it text and it rewrites it. As simple as that. The Hemingway App uses natural language processing just as Dragon Dictation does.

Artificial intelligence can easily analyze the structure of a storyline. For example, the commonly used storyline includes three acts – a protagonist, a problem, the attempt of the protagonist solve the problem, which eventually worsens the situation. And finally, the protagonist finds a solution. The commonly used structure can be input in the computers so they can easily write a compelling short story.

AI computers have analyzed a huge amount of storylines and summed up the results. The most popular stories follow the rise-fall-rise pattern but the ones that really engage humans are the tragedy ones. Once a computer is armed with that information it is ready to write an engaging story. If it knows what people like and what they do not, it can make us cry, laugh or think.

Computers have found out that the most appreciated stories do not have happy endings, it turns out that we actually enjoy tragedies. So back to the questions from the beginning. Can AI write scripts? Yes, it can and it did. In 2016 and 2017 two short movies were released, Sunspring and It’s no Game? They were both written by a machine. How did it do them? Very simple, the computer was fed with hundreds of sci-fi scripts and was asked to write a unique script. The AI put in action the most commonly used phrases and patterns in its scripts.

Apart from scripts, AI can help journalists when writing the news. AI apps can successfully write articles when presented with charts, tables or sports scores, thus freeing up time for more investigative journalism. Writing tools, however, cannot replace humans when it comes to more sophisticated data.
