Amazon.com is reportedly working to develop a chip designed for artificial intelligence. The chip is to be integrated with Echo and other hardware solutions powered by Amazon`s virtual assistant.

The news was first reported by The Information who quotes a source familiar with Amazon`s plans.

The chips would eventually enable Alexa to absorb information more quickly and provide answers to users` questions. The goal is to give useful answers in just a few seconds, something that is very important for virtual assistant devices that are constantly competing for speed.

The fact is that virtual assistants like Amazon`s Alexa, Apple`s Siri or Google`s Assistant can now be integrated with smart speakers, smartphones, and even washing machines. However, they are still not widely used. A research by a company called Activate reportedly found that the majority of users utilize virtual assistants only to set alarms, play music, or get the weather.

Still, some of the technology fans are said to be deploying more advanced features connected to other home devices. For instance, users can connect their Alexa devices to lamps, TV screens, coffee machines and others, and thus turn them on and off with a voice command.

With that in mind, Amazon started expanding the range of its services by signing some strategic partnerships. For instance, The New York Times reported that Hisense will put the assistant into its television sets, whereas Kohler will apply it to a new bathroom mirror that can dim the lights and fill the bathtub using voice commands. PC companies like HP, Asus, and Acer have also announced plans to integrate Amazon`s service into their computers. At the same time, electronics makers like Panasonic, Garmin and others will apply the Alexa service to cars.

Anyway, it seems like virtual assistants are becoming more and more popular, finding some unexpected applications to please their users. Naturally, this may lead to more companies experimenting with AI in an effort to improve these services.

It is to be seen whether Amazon has really planned to work on introducing an improved AI chip for its Alexa service.
